Environmental preservation with NFT issuance.

Logo da Parceira

With the advancement of the biodiversity agenda and the importance of the Serra da Bocaina — a remnant of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most threatened biomes in the world — Sicoob Metropolitano became the first financial institution in Brazil to acquire NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) representing environmental preservation areas, through the startup Preservaland.

The first financial institution in Brazil to invest in environmental NFTs.

Methodology

The project methodology combines blockchain technology, environmental traceability, and voluntary forest conservation. A partnership was established with Preservaland, a startup founded in the United States by Brazilians, which transforms surplus preserved areas into digital assets with continuous satellite tracking and blockchain validation. Preservaland monitors the integrity of the forest, ensuring that it remains intact. The asset is not intended for economic exploitation—its value lies in the conservation of the standing forest and the positive environmental impact generated.

Results

The project guarantees the effective preservation of 1 hectare of Atlantic Forest, preventing the emission of 15 tCO2 from deforestation. It is a pioneering innovation in the Brazilian cooperative financial sector, combining sustainability and technology. The initiative generates an indirect environmental contribution, with the potential for carbon sequestration and protection of local biodiversity. Furthermore, it provides strategic visibility, with future possibilities such as the inclusion of cooperative members who preserve native areas, the generation of carbon credits, and the integration of Sicoob into climate-impacted ecosystems.
