The largest Private Natural Heritage Reserve in Brazil, the Sesc Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve, was created 28 years ago, shortly after the 1992 Earth Summit (ECO-92), as a lifelong commitment by the CNC-Sesc-Senac System to nature conservation. The initiative aims to protect a sample of the biome and be a benchmark in conservation, research, ecotourism, and community action.

Methodology

The Sesc Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) was created with the acquisition of areas in Barão de Melgaço (MT) and its management is carried out collaboratively, through an Advisory Council formed by representatives of communities, public institutions and researchers (UFMT, Embrapa Pantanal, UFRJ, INAU, CNRRPN, Arsapejo, Funatura, Museu Nacional, ICMBio, SEMA-MT and USP), which guides the management, the implementation of conservation projects and sustainable development. In 28 years, more than 300 publications have been produced in the area, which also guide its actions using Integrated Fire Management (IFM) techniques.

Results

The Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) has established itself as a research center, with over 300 publications and 185 institutions involved. The knowledge produced has underpinned policies for fire prevention, support for the surrounding area, and conservation of endangered species such as the jaguar, giant anteater, and maned wolf. Based on the success of the initiative, the project was expanded, now encompassing nine areas of activity in four municipalities that comprise the Sesc Pantanal Socio-environmental Hub. Through this initiative, thousands of people benefit, strengthening actions in favor of the conservation of the Pantanal.
