Sustainability is Innovation: Eutectic Plates
Maintaining the ideal temperature for sensitive products like chocolates and snacks during transport has always been a challenge in the food industry. Therefore, Mondelez implemented an innovative solution: the use of eutectic plates in refrigerated trucks. This eliminated the traditional use of diesel in the truck climate control process and reduced our carbon emissions in the transport of refrigerated products.
Innovation in temperature control and CO₂ reduction
Methodology
Seeking innovation in logistics, we developed a solution using eutectic plates in truck trailers, in partnership with the transport company TecPet. The plates function as "cold accumulators" and reach their freezing point through charging via electrical energy, allowing the maintenance of low temperatures for up to 10 hours with minimal energy consumption. The implementation of the eutectic plates was carried out strategically and gradually, and included technical and financial feasibility studies, pilot tests, partnerships, training, among other initiatives. The technology is currently undergoing intellectual property analysis for use in truck trailers for Mondelez.
Eutectic plates: low-impact "cold accumulators"
Results
The initiative resulted in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 25% per truck. Furthermore, costs were also reduced due to decreased fuel consumption and the need for diesel generator maintenance. Product quality during transport was also improved, ensuring that products arrive at points of sale in perfect condition, preserving flavor and texture, which increases customer satisfaction and reduces losses and damage. Currently, Mondelez Brazil has 11 partner trucks equipped with the technology and is studying fleet expansion.
