Klabin is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its bioeconomic solutions aim for low carbon emissions and the efficient use of natural resources. Biomass gasification has been implemented as an alternative to fossil fuels, making operations more sustainable and mitigating the impact of climate change.

Biomass gasification as a clean alternative

Methodology

The biomass gasification plant allows the replacement of BPF oil, a fossil fuel, with Syngas (synthesis gas) generated from the thermal decomposition of wood chips from the Company's planted forests. This solution contributes to the reduction of GHG emissions from its operations and is part of the KODS - Klabin's Sustainable Development Goals, aligned with the UN's 2030 Agenda, which aims to reduce direct GHG emissions by 42% (base year 2022) and guarantee an energy matrix of at least 92% renewable by 2030, in addition to the NetZero commitment by 2050.

Replacing fossil oil with biomass syngas

Results

The Biomass Gasification Plant has enabled Klabin to reduce its consumption of approximately 18,000 tons of BPF oil per year, increasing the share of renewable fuels in its energy matrix to over 921 Tbp. Replacing fossil fuels with Syngas has resulted in the mitigation of approximately 56,000 tons of CO₂eq in the company's operations. This initiative directly contributes to Klabin's progress towards meeting its SBTi targets and aligns with its NetZero commitment, which aims for a minimum reduction of 901 Tbp in absolute GHG emissions from scopes 1 and 2 by 2050.
