BEEF TRACEABILITY

Livestock farming is the main driver of deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes, contributing to GHG emissions and biodiversity loss. Carrefour Brazil manages climate risks and adopts traceability as one of its strategies to reduce impacts, implementing 100% satellite monitoring of its supplier slaughterhouses, being the only retailer that monitors all biomes and uses additional analysis tools, such as the Mapbiomas Alert.

The only retailer that monitors all biomes with advanced tools like Mapbiomas Alert.

Methodology

The actions taken were: 1) Robust governance with the establishment of a Forestry Committee, composed of external experts and company C-level executives, to support the agenda of combating deforestation and conserving forests, updating the Policy for Purchasing Fresh Beef, signed by the meatpacking plants, and defining targets. 2) Development of a systemic interface with meatpacking plants, with automated transmission of the origination of direct farms for each batch of meat purchased. 3) Structuring of a process for the homologation and socio-environmental monitoring of suppliers, using satellite imagery and applying consequential measures, being the first retailer to monitor farms in the Cerrado biome and, in partnership with the meatpacking plants, expanding its operations to other biomes, also incorporating the Mapbiomas Alert in all of them.

Integration of the Mapbiomas Alert system for all biomes, increasing transparency and sustainability.

Results

In 2024, Carrefour Brazil monitored 100% of its active meat processing plants (18) with socio-environmental analysis, with 11 being blocked. A total of 31,802 direct farms were monitored, encompassing 24,631,946 hectares across all biomes, using double-checked satellite imagery. The company ensures transparency with stakeholders and civil society through the publication of monitoring data. Risk mitigation improved with the inclusion of additional criteria in the protocol, reducing the time gap for deforestation analysis in all Brazilian biomes.
