Agriculture is responsible for 20% of global GHG emissions, but it can reduce and sequester emissions with regenerative soil practices and decarbonized inputs. To address these challenges, Yara has partnered with Cooxupé to produce regenerative coffee using fertilizers with a lower carbon footprint, produced with Biomethane: Climate Choice™.

From soil to bean: regenerative coffee with low-emission fertilizers.

Methodology

Globally, Yara has developed routes for the production of nitrogen fertilizers from renewable ammonia, reducing GHG emissions by up to 90%. Furthermore, it has built connections with the food chain – such as Cooxupé – to ensure these inputs reach farmers and consumers worldwide. In the first year, 29 coffee growers who are benchmarks in sustainability used these fertilizers and regenerative practices in the 24/25 harvest, such as the efficient use of nutrients based on nutritional recommendation tools, the use of cover crops between rows, and organic compost.

From renewable ammonia to regenerative coffee: low-emission fertilizers in practice.

Results

Previous studies on the use of regenerative practices in coffee, combined with Yara fertilizers, have shown a productivity increase of 14% (48 to 55 bags/ha), a sensory quality assessment with a 3-point increase in quality (81 vs. 84), a carbon footprint 22% lower, and an income increase of R$5k/ha. With the use of Climate Choice™ fertilizers, this carbon footprint reduction can reach 40%, a significant value for reducing the footprint of coffee roasters. With Yara's solution, Brazilian farmers are already generating value for their production while protecting the planet.

Regenerating means winning: R$5 thousand more per hectare with low-carbon practices.
