PepsiCo uses innovation and technology in its Regenerative Agriculture Program to decarbonize the potato production chain, improve soil, optimize water use with efficient irrigation and rainwater harvesting, promote biodiversity, and support farmers with productive and sustainable solutions.

Smart irrigation: efficient water use as a cornerstone for decarbonization in agriculture.

Methodology

PepsiCo promotes regenerative agriculture through technology, innovation, and strategic partnerships with companies, universities (such as IFGO), and the open innovation ecosystem. The key differentiator is the integration of projects, supported by long-term partnerships with producers (up to 40 years). Each project is implemented in an area where the needs and specificities justify its application, with impacts monitored by the Cool Farm Tool, focusing on mini-sprinkler irrigation, low-carbon nutrition, cover crops, soil sensors, and biological inputs.

Regenerative agriculture at scale: Integrated systems and biodiversity driving sustainable potato production.

Results

Across 3600 hectares, we implemented large-scale regenerative solutions: 85% of the area with cover crops and biologicals, 54% with efficient irrigation, and 21% with soil sensors. As a result, we reduced carbon emissions by 6% (based on 2015 levels) and water consumption by 20.3% per ton of potatoes, increasing productivity with less environmental impact and rational use of natural resources.
