IRON ORE BRIQUETTE

Logo da Parceira

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of mining and have been working to help curb the increase in global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. In this sense, we have sought solutions to reduce and offset all carbon dioxide emissions from our operations and to help our steelmaking clients also reduce their emissions. From this challenge, a pioneering and innovative solution was born: the iron ore briquette, a new product we have developed over almost 20 years of research. The briquette can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in steel production by up to 101 Tbp compared to traditional processes because it eliminates the carbon-intensive sintering stage. This reduction is significant when considering that the steel industry is responsible for approximately 81 Tbp of global emissions.

Reducing steelmaking emissions – Eliminating sintering allows for up to 10% less GHG in steel production.

Methodology

Iron ore briquettes are an innovative product developed by Vale, obtained from the agglomeration of ore at low temperatures, using a technological solution of binders that confers high mechanical resistance to the final product. This technology offers important advantages in terms of sustainability and industrial efficiency. The briquettes have lower CO₂ emissions, emitting fewer greenhouse gases compared to traditional pelletizing and sintering processes. Furthermore, it eliminates the need for water in its manufacture, contributing to the conservation of water resources. The technology also reduces the emission of polluting gases, such as sulfur dioxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The cleaner production process reduces particulate emissions and can incorporate sand from mining tailings, promoting waste circularity and greater environmental efficiency.

Low-carbon mining: technology that reduces the emission of CO₂ and polluting gases.
