Decarbonization in Household Waste Management

Logo da Parceira

Given the opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in household waste collection, Solví – through its subsidiary Loga, responsible for managing household and healthcare waste in part of the city of São Paulo – has begun the gradual replacement of its diesel-powered fleet with compressed natural gas (CNG) and, soon, with biomethane.

Sustainable logistics: from diesel to CNG and biomethane – reducing emissions in waste collection.

Methodology

Solví has been working for 20 years in the development of fleets using alternative fuels to diesel, initially developing vehicle manufacturers, followed by operational testing. With the renewal of the concession with the City Hall, Loga began the gradual replacement of its fleet with a new one powered by CNG (which will be completed in the entire fleet by 2032), a pioneering initiative in Brazil. By becoming a producer of biomethane (produced from the purification of biogas from landfills), Solví will allow the replacement of CNG with biomethane, further contributing to the reduction of emissions.

Innovation and sustainability – 20 years of alternative fleets to diesel and pioneering spirit in Brazil.

Results

The use of CNG implemented in 32 vehicles (and by 2032 in 335 vehicles) in the fleet already allows for a significant reduction in GHG emissions. With the replacement of CNG by biomethane, vehicle performance is greater, increasing the scale of emission reduction (90% compared to diesel and 2.5 times greater than electric vehicles), also promoting the circularity of organic matter present in waste (since the waste generated by the population itself is transformed into fuel for vehicles) and boosting decarbonization and a low-carbon economy.

Scaling Impact – Replacing diesel with CNG and biomethane maximizes emission reduction and waste utilization.
