Repsol Sinopec and Porto do Açu have partnered to develop sustainable marine fuel from CO2 captured from the atmosphere for decarbonization. The proposal originated from Repsol Sinopec's experience in R&D of individual technologies, combined with Porto do Açu's ecosystem favorable to sustainable innovation.

Innovation and sustainability: integrating R&D and the ecosystem of the Port of Açu.

Methodology

The project combines CO₂ capture technologies from the air with the production of synthetic fuels, such as e-MGO or SAF. It includes the construction of a pilot plant in partnership with PUCRS, the installation of a direct air capture module, and the implementation of reactors that transform the captured CO₂ into syngas and then into liquid synthetic hydrocarbons, which are subsequently distilled into marine fuel. The Port of Açu will be used as a base for the development on a demonstrative scale.

Capture and conversion: Synthetic hydrocarbons from CO₂.

Results

Repsol Sinopec has implemented both technologies in Brazil, with R&D investments exceeding R$ 100 million in decarbonization. The DAC unit is the first in Latin America, while the technology for producing sustainable fuels from CO2 is pioneering in Brazil. The Port of Açu has a low-carbon H2 hub and an R&D ecosystem dedicated to leveraging innovative projects. It is an ideal location for a demonstrative pilot plant with the capacity to capture 5,000 tons of CO2 per year and produce 300 liters of e-MGO per day, suitable for testing and validation on support vessels.

Strategic capacity: 5,000 tons of CO₂ captured per year and 300 liters of e-MGO/day.
