In 2024, after a journey of more than a decade with the Nestlé Cocoa Plan program for the development of Brazilian cocoa farming, Nestlé launched the "More Intelligence, More Cocoa" project with 24 farms located in the Medicilândia region of Pará state. The project aimed to test a model that sought to increase productivity by 20% and profitability for cocoa producers by 30% within three years. Through comprehensive technical and managerial guidance, the project offered certified producers the opportunity to improve their practices and reach new levels of success in a short and feasible timeframe for the region. In addition to technical knowledge, the project promoted the adoption of sustainable practices, preserving the environment and ensuring the longevity of cocoa production for future generations.

From cocoa to agrodiversity: Personalized technical assistance and attention to the realities of Amazonian farmers.

Methodology

Farms participating in the “More Intelligence, More Cocoa” program receive monthly half-day visits from agricultural engineers, all with a high level of knowledge in cocoa farming. These engineers bring best management practices to the producers, explaining and monitoring fundamental practices such as pruning, fertilization, harvesting, and processing/storage of the cocoa beans. In addition, the technicians support the farm by creating and implementing a detailed farm management plan. Cocoa farmers are encouraged to record all farm purchases and activities, improving financial control and farm management. This results in more assertive decision-making and increased operational efficiency, as well as contributing to traceability and transparency in agricultural practices. It is worth noting that, despite its simple methodology, the project is highly necessary in a region with a scarcity of knowledge and a great need for modernization of practices and access to technology. Furthermore, it presents itself as a low-investment, high-return model in productivity in a short period of time. This project, due to its high scalability and replicability, becomes a fundamental tool not only for raising Brazilian cocoa to the productivity levels it once had, but, above all, for placing Brazilian cocoa on the global map as the most sustainable, responsible, and highest quality cocoa available.

The program promotes rapid productivity improvement with a simple, accessible, and low-investment model.

Results

In the first pilot program, which included 24 participating farms, the group achieved an average productivity gain of 18% and increased profitability by 44% in the first year of the project. Some farms even achieved average productivity almost 3 times higher than the Brazilian average. Due to the exceptional results and the high receptiveness of the participating producers, we expanded the "More Intelligence, More Cocoa" project to another 76 farms in new regions: Bahia, Espírito Santo, and a new region in the state of Pará. In addition to this expansion, we believe in free and widespread access to knowledge, and therefore, the Nestlé Cocoa Plan program, of which the "More Intelligence, More Cocoa" project is a part, created the chatbot Theo in 2021. Via WhatsApp, it answers producers' questions about cocoa cultivation and also shares relevant information. Theo, the virtual assistant, was named after Theobroma cacao, the scientific name for the cocoa tree.

Productivity that becomes reality: 18% more production and 44% more income in the first year alone.
