To reduce risks in the storage and stacking of gypsum, a co-product of phosphate fertilizer production, Mosaic invested in its commercial development, since agricultural gypsum can be used to improve soil quality, promoting the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of the industrial process.

Large-scale use of agricultural gypsum improves the soil and contributes to productivity and carbon sequestration.

Methodology

The project was initiated by the company itself. The agricultural use of phosphogypsum aims to improve the soil by supplying calcium to subsurface layers, neutralizing toxic aluminum present in the subsoil, and serving as a source of calcium and sulfur for plants. Gypsum also deepens plant roots, and with greater exploration of the root system, there is better absorption of water and nutrients, reduction of water deficit, and increased carbon sequestration in the soil, contributing to sustainability, agricultural efficiency, and mitigation of environmental impacts.

Agricultural gypsum is a sustainable solution that avoids industrial waste and transforms a waste product into a regenerative resource.

Results

The development of gypsum as a product has enabled the reduction of stockpiling areas and environmental risks associated with storage. Approximately 5 million tons of gypsum per year have been diverted from landfills and dams. From the Uberaba and Cajati plants, gypsum is shipped to more than 10 states, benefiting approximately 5 million hectares of productive areas. In terms of volume, it has become the second most traded product by Mosaic. In 2022, gypsum was certified as an agricultural input for use in organic farming, allowing it to be used by farmers producing under this system.

More than 5 million hectares of productive land benefit from the use of gypsum, distributed across more than 10 states.
