Resilience and Climate Adaptation of Neoenergia PE
An increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events is expected, which amplifies the risks to our assets. We have developed a climate resilience and adaptation project for Neoenergia Pernambuco (NEO PE) based on climate scenario planning and our own methodology for analyzing threats and mapping resilience measures.
Climate scenario planning and proprietary methodology guide the adaptation process.
Methodology
Since 2019, Neoenergia has been developing climate studies with internal and external partners to assess risks to its assets, and in 2023, we initiated the NEO PE Adaptation Project, using SSP2-4.5 (intermediate) and SSP5-8.5 (pessimistic) climate scenarios for the decades 2021-30 and 2031-40, and historical data on lightning and wildfires from the last 10 years. We involved more than 50 employees in analyzing the threats – strong winds, maximum temperature, precipitation, lightning, and wildfires – and identifying actions to strengthen physical and operational resilience.
Over 50 employees participated in identifying threats and resilience measures.
Results
Following an analysis of climate threats, resilience and climate adaptation measures adopted by the planning, performance, and operation and maintenance areas of NEO PE were identified, including innovation projects on climate issues. The measures identified were both physical, such as the replacement of equipment and infrastructure, and institutional/process-related, such as contingency plans and resilience studies and projects. The climate scenario information database is also an important tool to support decision-making in future investments.
