Biodiversity Footprint for Companies
With the growing demand to measure impacts on biodiversity and meet GBF target 15, I Care has applied the Corporate Biodiversity Footprint (CBF) tool to calculate the corporate footprint in scopes 1, 2 and 3, translating pressures such as climate change, pollution and habitat loss into the endpoint in km2.MSA.year, applicable to various sectors.
Measuring corporate impacts on biodiversity across all scopes.
Methodology
Data was collected on land occupation and transformation, fragmentation, pollution, effluents, waste, reforestation and restoration, environmental certifications, raw materials and products, transport, GHG emissions, etc. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), geospatial modeling, and ecological analysis of indicators related to the main pressures on biodiversity—habitat loss, climate change, and pollution—were then integrated. Finally, the impacts were converted into km².MSA.year (Average Species Abundance) and analyzed in scopes 1, 2, and 3 for biodiversity.
Integration of LCA, geospatial modeling, and ecological analysis.
Results
Biodiversity impact hotspots were identified in the Upstream and Midstream regions, measured in km².MSA.year, where 1 km² of MSA is equivalent to the destruction of 1 km² of pristine ecosystem. The results supported the strengthening of companies' biodiversity strategies, with the definition of mitigation and compensation measures, sustainable sourcing of raw materials, and the adoption of certification standards that ensure lower impact. Furthermore, they assisted in reporting and compliance with sustainability standards such as GRI, CDP, DJSI, and TNFD, in addition to providing the structural basis for the Biodiversity Action Plan.
