The BioCMPC Project consists of the expansion and modernization of CMPC's Guaíba Industrial Unit in Rio Grande do Sul. The project began in 2021 and ended in late 2023 with the start of BioCMPC operations, and has promoted improvements in production capacity, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, waste, noise, water consumption and effluent generation.

Reducing GHG emissions, waste, noise, and water consumption.

Methodology

At BioCMPC, 17 actions related to the deployment of new environmental management and control equipment and the improvement of existing systems were implemented. The coal-fired boiler was deactivated and replaced by a recovery boiler that uses biomass (black liquor) from the pulp production process as its main fuel. In addition, instruments for environmental monitoring were installed, such as electronic noses, noise measurement stations, and inhalable particle detectors. The initiatives were developed in accordance with sustainability standards, such as those of the International Finance Corporation and the GHG Protocol.

System enhancements aligned with IFC sustainability standards and the GHG Protocol.

Results

With the start of operations at BioCMPC and the decommissioning of the coal-fired boiler, there was a reduction of 53.41 tCO3T in Scope 1 and 2 tCO2e emissions between 2021 and 2024. There was also a valorization of waste of 981 tCO3T, a reduction in water consumption of 2 m3/ADt and in noise levels of 2 to 5 dB, in addition to the new electrostatic precipitator having an efficiency of 991 tCO3T in retaining inhalable particles. A reduction in perceived odors from the manufacturing process and noise was observed through the installation of silencers and the increase in the acoustic wall around the factory. In addition to the socio-environmental improvements, an increase of 201 tCO3T in capacity was generated at the Guaíba Industrial Unit.

20% increase in production capacity at the Guaíba Industrial Unit.
