Faced with the lack of access to regular and safe energy for 240,000 families in low-income communities in Minas Gerais, and aware of its commitment to reversing this scenario, Cemig identified the need to implement a program focused on this population to guarantee their access to affordable, clean, and reliable energy. The proposed solution involved the implementation of new energy networks and the promotion of social actions in Belo Horizonte and the metropolitan region. The idea arose from technical studies and exchanges with the communities involved.

Connected communities, a bright future: affordable and reliable energy for all.

Methodology

The program was implemented in three stages: community diagnosis, technical engineering planning and participatory stakeholder engagement, and execution of energy regularization. Practices included modernizing the regions' electrical infrastructure, replacing light bulbs with more efficient models, and including families in the Social Electricity Tariff, which reduces electricity bills for low-income consumers. The project had the support of local municipal agencies, the Public Prosecutor's Office, community leaders, and associations.

Partnering with communities and public authorities to bring citizen-centered energy.

Results

Since 2023, 20,000 families in vulnerable urban areas have gained access to regular, secure energy. A milestone was the work in Izidora, one of the largest urban settlements in Latin America. An investment of R$1,400,250 million benefited more than 4,000 families. With legalized energy, they experience more reliable public lighting, the use of electric showers, and safe food storage, in addition to obtaining proof of residence—an essential document for accessing various public services. The forecast is to regularize approximately 240,000 families in the state by 2027.
