Alcoa overcame challenges in the rehabilitation of the Juruti mine (PA) through innovation, integrating mine planning and environmental management. With the support of local associations that produce native seedlings, it halved the time between suppression, mineral extraction, and rehabilitation, reinforcing its commitment to biodiversity recovery and its legacy with local communities.

Monitoring forest rehabilitation in the field.

Methodology

In 2023, Alcoa in Juruti updated its PRAD (Plan for the Recovery of Degraded Areas) and developed an integrated plan for deforestation, mining, and rehabilitation. The planning team, which includes a forestry engineer, develops integrated plans approved by the environmental agency, which seek to reduce deforestation and increase rehabilitation areas. An operational team focuses on the daily execution of rehabilitation, with targets monitored by leadership, while the environmental team monitors the quality of the rehabilitated areas in the field and indicates corrective actions if necessary.

Integrated planning, rigorous execution, and continuous monitoring: restoring to generate the future.

Results

The rehabilitation performance can be verified through the rehabilitation/suppression ratio, which increased from 0.5 (2023) to 1.5 (2024). There was a reduction of 47% in suppression and an increase of 42% in rehabilitation (2022-2023). The time between suppression, mineral extraction, and rehabilitation was halved due to the implementation of progressive recovery. Furthermore, 100% of the 150 seedling species come from 4 local associations, part of a socio-environmental program for 90 families in 18 communities. More than 760,000 seedlings have already been produced, generating revenues of around R$192,000/year per association.

A forest that grows with the community: ecological restoration combined with income generation.
