Rumo invests in more sustainable trains.
The Sustainable Trains case study aims to demonstrate that rail transport can be much more efficient, safe, and low-carbon. Through investments in new technologies, we have improved the performance of trains, making them more economical and less polluting. Today, Rumo is the leading reference in energy efficiency in the rail sector.
More economical and less polluting trains are transforming rail transport.
Methodology
After identifying the operational challenges, Rumo invested in new technologies: 1) Trip Optimizer, a system that allows trains to enter automatic driving mode, reducing fuel consumption and GHG emissions; 2) Circulation Optimizer (OC), an operational controller that allows for agile and precise decision-making; 3) the replacement of communication with locomotives, from satellite to high-speed fiber optics and the implementation of 4G LTE technology in the Serra de Santos; 4) the improvement, with the use of AI, of the DTQ technology, Broken Rail Detector.
Circulation Optimizer (OC) enables quick and accurate operational decisions.
Results
We are a world leader in the use of Trip Optimizer. In 81% of trips on our main corridor (MT-Santos), the train operates semi-autonomously, guaranteeing a reduction in diesel consumption of 4% and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 25,000 tons per year. Circulation Optimizer – reduction from 30 minutes to plan 12 hours of operation to 10 seconds to plan 48 hours. A gain of 1 hour in transit time. LTE – reduction of approximately 97% in the time for sending information between trains and the Operational Control Center (CCO). DTQ – we increased the accuracy levels in identifying track problems by 98%.
DTQ with AI increases the accuracy in identifying problems on the road by 98%.
