Natura, WEG, and ATAIC are developing the first agro-industry in a floodplain area powered by solar energy for the extraction of vegetable oils in the Amazon. It benefits 470 agro-extractive families on Ilha das Cinzas, Pará, increasing their income by up to 601% (30% of the total cost per capita). This is the 20th unit supported by Natura and the first in partnership with WEG to include a solar energy system with batteries.

Direct benefit to 470 families, with up to 60% increase in income.

Methodology

ATAIC's agro-industry is the 20th inaugurated as part of Natura's industrial decentralization plan, which anticipates production stages for installations in communities. ATAIC has been supplying murumuru, ucuuba, and patauá for 9 years and will now process oils and butters, increasing income by up to 60%. Natura supported the implementation of the agro-industry, and WEG provided the photovoltaic system with batteries (BESS – Battery Energy Storage System), in a pioneering technological arrangement for the Amazon. The diesel generator will now be used only for emergency purposes, reducing GHG emissions and production costs.

Results

The model of productive decentralization in the Amazon boosts socio-biodiversity chains, generating income and jobs from products with higher added value, while maintaining extractive activities in symbiosis with the standing forest. The sale of oils and butters instead of seeds and almonds increased the income of the 470 families of ATAIC by up to 60%. The WEG photovoltaic system with batteries (BESS – Battery Energy Storage System) ensures energy security from clean sources, eliminating more than 30 tons of CO2e per year and the costs of fossil fuels.
