CEOs meet with Governor of Pará in Brasilia

The Council of Leaders brings together CEOs of companies associated with CEBDS and Helder Barbalho, Governor of Pará, with a view to COP30, which will take place next year in Belém, Pará

This Thursday (05), the meeting of the Council of Leaders, an event promoted by the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), brought together leaders and representatives of large associated companies and the Governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, at the headquarters of Banco do Brasil, in Brasília. The meeting aimed to advance the journey towards COP30, which will have the capital of Pará as the stage, Brazil's leading role in the Sustainability agendas, and the role of the private sector in this moment of opportunities for the country.

More than 50 representatives from associated companies participated in the meeting, which discussed the trajectory towards the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, the legacy of the event and the opportunities for various sectors in the country.

“Since 2019, the State has been building the foundations of the necessary environment for us to get here by introducing ourselves and inviting partners who, before choosing us, can get to know us, learn about what we are doing, and seek support, so that we can, from there, join forces. CEBDS has been an important partner throughout this journey. And your participation is essential. I increasingly believe that the private sector is essential. The private sector has been working to finance environmental issues,” emphasized Helder Barbalho.

Sustainable Development in Brazil has been a constant topic, with the country being considered for global leadership in the sustainable agenda in the world and COP30 as a stage for advances in the energy and ecological transition.

“The fact that we have the largest environmental event in the world taking place in Brazil, and in the Amazon, elevates us to a strategic and leadership role, so that we can be the driving force behind this agenda at an international level, discussing environmental emergencies,” reiterated Helder Barbalho.

What is COP30 and where will it be held?

COP30, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, will be held in Belém, Pará state, Brazil, in 2025. The global event will bring together world leaders, experts, organizations and representatives of the private sector to discuss urgent and innovative solutions to combat climate change. The choice of the Amazon as the venue is strategic, highlighting the importance of protecting the world’s largest tropical biome and promoting the role of the bioeconomy and environmental preservation in the global climate agenda.

COPs have been held annually since 1995, when the first edition was held in Berlin. Landmark events such as COP21 in Paris resulted in the historic Paris Agreement, committing countries to limit global warming to 1.5°C. More recently, COP28, hosted in Dubai, and COP29, in Baku, focused on climate finance and a fair energy transition. These events paved the way for COP30 in Brazil to advance more ambitious and specific goals, with an emphasis on preserving tropical forests and reducing carbon emissions.
